Dumb question, but why did you remove the brake fluid reservoir cap?

To retract the caliper piston you have to push fluid back into the lines (and therefore into the reservoir). Without removing the cap, you'd have to raise the air pressure in the reservoir or do it slow enough that the venting on the cap can equalize the pressure as you put more fluid back into the reservoir.

Therefore it's easier to just remove the cap.

Ummmmm. You really shouldn't be pushing fluid back into the reservoir. You are putting dirty fluid back in, you should open a bleed screw and push the piston In that way then add clean fluid when done. This is just preventative maintainence on the brake system. This is just the small things you learn in school that most ppl including mechanics fail to do because of being lazy or in a hurry
