For anyone not familiar with this area, Gateway is on the IL side of the Missouri river and staying in IL may be convenient for access to Gateway Motor Speedway, BUT the area of E. St. Louis is not exactly friendly and should not be taken lightly. If you want to spend time in the city, cross the river. Keep in mind, IL is right now the only non concealed carry state in the nation but that doesn't stop some folks from packing.

Thanks for bringing that up. I might've ended up driving into Illinois not even remembering that. Guess I'll be staying in Missouri the whole time ;D.

Have fun and drive safe,

I once went to one of the projects with one of my bosses who did not grow up in as rough an area I as did in DC. A guy in an elevator asked him about watch and I had to explain to the guy why that wasn't going to happen. My boss was clueless.

We took selecting the area to stay very seriously. I feel the location of the hotel is secure and as always there is "safety in numbers". The hotel is far enough from East St Louis that we should not have any issues.

I haven't raced in a few years, but Gateway Raceway has been my stomping ground since around 1990 and I lived in Fairview Heights for a good number of years. East St. Louis is as bad as the worst parts of Detroit, but Gateway is off by itself, right off the highway. Fairview Heights is basic suburbia and has a direct highway route around 15 minutes away. Tons of shopping and restaurants as well, and only 20 minutes from downtown St. Louis if you want to hit the sites there. Staying in Fairview will be way cheaper than St. Louis proper as well. If Drury books up, hit up the tons of other places in Fairview, Swansea, or O'Fallon.

I still live in the area but I'm not sure if I'll be able to make any events because of prior commitments, but I'll sure try if I can swing it. If anyone has any questions about the area hit me up.

BTW - Illinois just had our first concealed carry bill pass the House and Senate, but it'll probably be 6 months to a year before everything is settled and someone can actually get a permit. Missouri honors most other state's permits, but Illinois does not.

I'm thinking of staying about 20 minutes NE of the speedway. Any locals of the area have any input as to safety? My girlfriend works for Hilton and got us a great discount at the Hampton Inn.
Nothing NE of the track would be as bad as East St. Louis or downtown St. Louis in Missouri, but there are small pockets of questionsable areas in any suburban town. Can you be more specific on location? (Edwardsville, Granite City, Alton, etc.)

If you haven't booked your room at the Drury, please do it NOW! Tomorrow they release the remaining rooms in our block back into the general pool. If you are not booked yet, you risk not getting the group discount.
