Green Filter & Your Sound Symposer

Noticed that a lot of us were noting the loss of sound from the sound symposer. I was attributing it to the cold temperatures and thought that with the return of warm weather, it would start working again.

Well today, it reached nearly 60 degrees. Took my car out for a spirited drive and go no sound from the sound symposer at all. Car sounded like a normally aspirated Focus!

I got to thinking and swapped out the Green Filter, replacing it with the OEM paper filter and the sound was restored!

I think it must have something to do with the open ended design of the Green Filter as this didn't happen when I had my K&N filter in with a closed end.

So, if you like the sound enough from the sound symposer that you miss it like I did, the Green Filter may not be the choice for you.

I'd imagine that when I replace the exhaust the sound that goes missing with the Green Filter won't be missed so much.

It's strange, though, because I have a green filter and have not noticed the loss of the sound symposer. I also have Torrie's tune, so I don't know if that could somehow restore it?

I didn't notice it at first. It worked as usual. Maybe it's a gradual thing that requires a closed end filter to reset it.

Either way, I'm leaving the paper filter in for the rest of the winter.

Don't know what to tell ya, I'm not an engineer.

Mine stopped working and I was about to make an appointment to have it serviced. Thought I better pull the Green Filter before it goes in. Installed the paper filter and it works.

Nothing to worry about. just makes the car too darn quiet!

Without it, and a stock exhaust, it's pretty quiet.

I'm not sure there's much to be concerned about because the symposer was merely an aesthetic benefit; I don't think it is mechanically important. I paid attention more closely this morning, and I still get symposer sound when I -really- punch it, but it's definitely less frequent than before. I've had my green filter for about 500 miles now.

It's been very cold here and I've had the Green Filter on for a month and my symposer still works fine.

Finally got my Green filter today and installed it earlier. Temps are around the 40's right now. Went for a quick test drive and my Sound Symposer was fine, in fact, it seemed louder. I would bet that's just a psychological thing though. Also, I really love the sound that the filter makes. I'll be sad when it starts to quiet down.

Don't know. Was thinking someone might be able to shed some light on it.

Green filter running for about a month now....sound symposer works perfectly fine and been in the teens/20's in the mornings and mid 30's in the afternoon.

Only thing different is I can't keep my foot out of it from hearing the BPV now :)

Update to my last post. Took the car out today and it was around 36 degrees. Got on it and it is definetely quieter then before. You can hear the symposer but its nowhere near as loud as it is with the stock filter.

I'm having the same experience. The symposer is much less active. I miss it, especially because I can't afford a new exhaust at the moment.

Sho - did you ever install the K&N filter? I'm wondering if it would provide a nice compromise between increased flow and maintaining the symposer functionality, because it is a closed end filter.
